11+ tuition for the Independent Schools

At English Matters, we prepare pupils for the Independent School 11+ entrance exams — the standard-format papers testing both comprehension and creative writing.

Our pupils have consistently been offered places at North London Collegiate, Merchant Taylors', Haberdashers' Girls' and St Paul's.

Eight weeks of focused teaching, from mid-September to the end of November, in groups of no more than five.

What the sessions cover

Two strands, comprehension and extended writing, brought together with regular timed practice.

Comprehension

Written in full, at the high-level analysis the top schools expect.

  • Point, Evidence and Explanation in depth
  • North London Collegiate style questions
  • Writer's craft and word choice
  • Inference across a whole passage

Extended Writing

Sustained composition, planned and completed within time.

  • Continuous writing to a brief
  • Narrative, descriptive and persuasive writing
  • Every format set by the exams, not just narrative
  • Advanced vocabulary, given particular emphasis

Timed Papers

The examination itself, rehearsed until familiar.

  • Complete papers under timed conditions
  • Marked and reviewed in detail, question by question
  • Pacing, and the judgement of when to move on

This reflects the schools our pupils most commonly sit for. The course prepares for Independent School entrance more broadly, and we are glad to discuss any school not listed above.

What parents say

HBS + St Paul's

She started in Year 5 and we were worried it was a little late — but she got into both HBS and St Paul's. The sessions kept learning engaging while targeting her weak areas with real precision.

— Deepa N S

QE + Habs Boys

Sumona helped him crack both Grammar (QE) and Independent school (Habs Boys) 11+ exams with confidence. She provides much needed motivation and encouragement throughout.

— Amit Trivedi

NLCS + Habs + Scholarship

My daughter got into all the private schools we applied for — including an academic scholarship. We are so grateful for the focused, thoughtful preparation she received.
