11+ Comprehension

HBS · QE Boys · Tiffin · Sutton Grammar Schools

The foundation of 11+ English

Comprehension sits at the heart of 11+ preparation. It is a major component of almost all Grammar and Independent School English papers — but its importance goes much further. The ability to read closely, decode meaning and understand language underpins vocabulary, verbal reasoning, writing and even the interpretation of questions across the wider 11+.

At English Matters, we place comprehension at the centre of 11+ preparation. A child who understands what they read, sees what a question is really asking and can work out meaning from context is better equipped for every part of the exam.

Where the difficulty begins

Reads the passage, but misses what the question is really asking.
Knows the words, but cannot see how they relate to each other.
Has ideas, but struggles to express them clearly.

These may look like different difficulties. Very often, they begin with the same thing: understanding.

The skills comprehension builds

Good comprehension is more than finding an answer in a passage. Children learn to read closely, work out what is implied, understand unfamiliar vocabulary and support their answers with evidence from the text.

Close Reading
Slowly, precisely, attentively
Noticing detail, structure and a writer’s choices, rather than skimming for a quick answer.
Inference
Reading between the lines
Working out what a text implies rather than states: a character’s feelings, a writer’s intention, the meaning behind a phrase.
Vocabulary in Context
Meaning shaped by the sentence
Seeing how a word’s meaning shifts with the sentence around it, and building the range 11+ papers assume.

Supported throughout by

Evidence & Precision
Answering exactly what is asked, with the right detail from the text.
Literary & Non-Fiction Range
Fiction, non-fiction, poetry and unfamiliar texts.
Exam Technique
Managing time, reading questions carefully and adapting to the paper.

From Reading to Writing

Rich comprehension passages do more than test understanding. They give children strong writing to learn from.

Comprehension — understand it

Children work with challenging, carefully chosen texts and learn to:

  • decode complex language and meaning
  • understand advanced vocabulary in context
  • notice sentence structure, punctuation and syntax
  • recognise how a writer creates meaning and effect
Creative Writing — use it

The same passages become models for writing. Children see:

  • how strong vocabulary is used naturally
  • how sentences are shaped and varied
  • how punctuation contributes to meaning and pace
  • how writers create description, atmosphere and character

They then bring these techniques into their own writing.

How comprehension is tested

Multiple Choice
Speed · precision · vocabulary · inference
Written Comprehension
Evidence · explanation · developed responses

Whether the answers are multiple choice or written, the child still needs to understand the passage, interpret the question and find the evidence for the answer.

My son started in year 6 with a focus on creative writing and reading comprehension which are very much required for 11+ exams. Within few weeks, he was able to analyse comprehension easily and able to elaborate answers in writing comprehension.
